In 6 days, we will have reached our second year of occupancy in Stately Doro Manor. Our first project was painting. A minor project. Next was windows, four of them, a mid level project. Then came the infamous patio, a decidedly major project. All that was done in the first few months. The next year was minor upgrades, one appliance, landscaping, window treatments, etc. Now, since Sunday, I’ve embarked on the flooring project. I’m doing about 900 square feet of flooring replacement. We purchased laminate flooring (we weighed the benefits of hardwood vs. laminate, and laminate suited our needs better), the padding, a table saw and various hand tools. I’ve already ripped up the old nasty carpeting in about 1/3rd of the house, removed the capret padding, tacking, the staples and the trim. Tonight, I start laying the underlayment and floor.I can only do portions at a time, as I have to move the furniture to and fro.
Let me tell you something. First, it helps to have a pro to call. We bought the flooring and took a class at Lowe’s with a guy named William. He rocks. I was able to call himi with questions and he remembered me. Second, it is necessary to have knee pads, unless you like your knees bloody and raw. Lastly, you’ll need an ice pack and some whiskey to help you wind down and kill some pain after each evening.
I’ll get some pics up soon of the whole project. I just hope my skills are 1337 enough to get this job done right.
